Drew Brees says he missed out on more Super Bowl rings with Saints teams that were good enough to win it all.

Marshawn Lynch: “What haven't you done on the football field?”

Drew Brees: “No league MVPs.”

Mike Robinson: “All them damn stats, you should have more Super Bowls than me. You got any regrets or seasons where you feel like, 'I could have done something here to get another ring?' 'Cause if you're in the game more, you win more.”

Drew Brees: “We've all had experiences on teams where you felt like you were good enough to win it all, and it just didn't happen.”

“Of the 20 years I played, there were at least three or four other teams that were good enough to win it all. In some cases, I felt like we truly had the best team in the league.”

“That's what's unique about the NFL. Other leagues have seven-game series; we have one game. If you have an off night or circumstances don't go your way, it's over. You don't get a chance to come back.”

“Take 2011, the most prolific offense in the history of the world. We ended up going to San Francisco and losing in a crazy game.”

“Then 2017, the Minneapolis Miracle. We were rolling. If we win that game, we go to Philly, and we didn't fear them.”

“2018 was the no-call at our place. In my opinion, we had the best team in football that year. If that call is made, we go play the Patriots in the Super Bowl.”

“And then look at 2020, we were good enough to win it all that year, too.”

I spent a year with the Saints, mostly on IR, but here’s my Drew Brees story.

Drew was one of the most meticulous workers I’ve ever been around.

That offseason, he invited guys from every position group out to San Diego, where he lived, to train with him. One week it was the RBs, another week the TEs, and one WRs.

I was the new guy on the block, so I was honestly surprised I even got the invite. I’d had a good OTAs and apparently caught his eye a little bit. That week it was me and Coby Fleener.

Drew paid for my first-class flight both ways, arranged transportation from the airport and put us up in a five-star hotel.

Every morning at 6 a.m., either Drew or Chase Daniel would pick us up and take us to the field. Drew already had every route he wanted to throw predetermined. A purpose for everything.

At one point after a route, I jogged back and tossed the ball near his feet.

Drew looked at me and said, “Next time, hand me the ball. I don’t like bending down more than I need to. 😂

After routes, he even paid for us to use his training facility and massage therapist.

I learned a lot from that week that had nothing to do with catching footballs.

How you do one thing is how you do everything.

Success leaves clues, and being around Drew gave me a chance to see some of them up close. Even in my brief time around him, he was one of the most diligent and intentional workers I’ve ever seen.

One of the best to ever do it. One of the hardest workers.

“I’m in Miami in an MRI tube for two hours just aching. They stick these big needles in my shoulder to test the nerve endings. I got this feeling of doubt. They don't really think I will be able to play. Their doctors said I had a 25% chance of coming back and playing again.”

“I go to New Orleans and it was like, ‘You are our guy.’ Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis said, ‘We’re building this offense around you.’”

“They did everything they could to roll out the red carpet despite all the circumstances. New Orleans was still destroyed.”

“Houses were off their foundations. There was a Chevy truck upside down in a living room. The car stops, and there’s a tugboat in the middle of the road.”

“I’m looking at my wife like, ‘Are you seeing what I’m seeing?’”

“It was one of those moments where it's like this is so much bigger than just football. We get to be part of the resurrection of one of America’s greatest cities.”

“This is God’s calling in our life. And that was the determining factor.”
