Maria Kanellis says AEW extended her contract so she could recover from tumor surgery.

On Wrestling Life with Ben Veal, Kanellis said the surgery was in October and the call came while she was still hospitalized. "They extended my contract out for three months when I was still in the hospital. So I get a call while I'm in the hospital. They want to extend the contract. You know, thank you for the blessing of having three months of recovery to kind of get back on my feet after that."

On the tumor: "It's a one in a million tumor. They don't usually find it until you're dead. It changes your personality. It affects your heart. It makes your blood pressure do this. So you're just angry all the time. And so I think a lot of me lost my fight for really fighting backstage for what I wanted. I gained weight through it because it also affects your hormones. So it was just a really dark time."

She said the tumor came alongside being split from The Kingdom and losing her Ring of Honor women's division role. "I was to the point where it was like, okay, I've got a tumor and I might die from it, and I lost my Kingdom, and I am now doing some stuff with Ring of Honor, but it's not a lot. And so I was also ready, I think, to be done."

Kanellis now runs a florist business, is writing a book, and has three children at home. "That's not saying that the door is shut, but I'm really enjoying what I'm doing now."
