“Lorenzo Salgado Araujo called Houston home for 35 years. On Tuesday, an ICE agent shot and killed him. His family learned of his death from a video before anyone bothered to knock on their door,” Mamdani stated.

“New York City stands with the Salgado family in demanding a full, independent investigation and real accountability. To the Salgado family and any immigrant family in this city living in fear: we grieve with you and we will continue to stand beside you in the pursuit of justice. Abolish ICE,” he added.

The killing of Salgado Araujo has rocked the nation, renewing widespread calls for this lawless, violent, masked paramilitary force to be dismantled for good. These thugs are undertrained and bloodthirsty. Many of them sign up hoping to find an excuse to use their firearms on innocent people of color.

ICE is insisting that the victim tried to drive his car into an agent's vehicle, but that's a reheated lie that they've used before to justify their extrajudicial executions. They said the same thing about Renée Good despite the footage showing that she was simply trying to drive off.

In Salgado Araujo's case, he was a law-biding family man who had built his business up through hard work and commitment to his community. His son Ronaldo Salgado stated that he was “close to obtaining his legal status" and had submitted photographs and statements for a work permit application.

The ICE agent who killed him was in an unmarked vehicle. Salgado Araujo presumably saw masked, armed men and assumed that they were criminals trying to rob or kill him. He tried to escape, was shot, and died at the hospital.

ICE has suspiciously not released footage of the shooting and will likely try to hide it from the public to minimize backlash. Meanwhile, the League of United Latin American Citizens is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the killer or his co-conspirators.

These shootings are not accidents. Yes, they are the unavoidable result of Trump flooding our streets with barely literate bullies with high-powered weapons. But they also serve an idealogical purpose for MAGA. The White House wants Latino communities living in constant terror. Their end goal is an America in which only white people feel safe and protected by the law.

We cannot allow that to happen. Abolish ICE.

BREAKING: HUGE VICTORY! The Supreme Court crushes Trump's sinister attempt to block states from counting mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day.

This is a massive win for our democracy...

The court ruled 5-4 that a Mississippi law that affords a grace period for mail-in ballots that arrive late can't be overturned by the White House. The ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and can be received up to five business days later.

Conservative Justices John Roberts and Amy Coney Barrett sided with the liberal justices to protect the law. They were able to point to the Constitution to support their decision since our founding document clearly states that elections are conducted by the states.

One imagines that Trump is particularly incensed by Coney Barrett's defection on this ruling, since he appointed her to the court under the assumption that she would serve as a direct extension of his rule. Instead, she has demonstrated a surprising willingness to buck his interests at times.

The MAGA attempt to invalidate the Mississippi law reveals a nasty truth at the heart of the Republican Party. These fascists know that they can't win elections by appealing to voters since their platform offers nothing but tax cuts for the rich and inane culture war issues. So rather than change their policies to appeal to more voters, their strategy is to reduce the voter pool.

Crucially, this new ruling means that at least 14 other states, including ones with important battleground districts, will be able to enforce their grace period-permitting laws.

This is a ruling worth celebrating. Despite Trump's unhinged rants about mail-in voting, it's a completely reliable and secure means for conducting elections. No study has ever found evidence of mass voter fraud. It's a myth concocted by Republicans to justify their assaults on our democracy.

BREAKING: Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune enrages MAGA by saying that "we don't need a weaponized" Director of National Intelligence after Trump nominated a total "nut" for the crucial job.

This is Trump's worst pick to date and everyone knows it...

"Bill Pulte is one of the worst members of the President's team and has convinced Trump to do more stupid stuff than anyone else in the past year," right-wing commentator Erick Erickson wrote on X.

And it appears that Thune, while avoiding such blunt words, may agree—

“If they nominate him to take the position permanently, he’ll have to go through a confirmation process and hearings and everything else, so, we’ll see,” Thune told reporters, throwing cold water on the idea of an accelerated confirmation process.

Trump's pick Bill Pulte has no prior intelligence experience and is widely regarded as nothing more than a regime hatchet man. This is the same Bill Pulte who, during his time leading the Federal Housing Finance Agency, made sham criminal referrals against political enemies of Trump like New York Attorney General Letitia James and Senator Adam Schiff.

"I think he's a nut," one House Republican told Politico last year.

"The guy's just a little too big for his britches," said another.

Thune was asked if he's worried that Pulte will "weaponize" the DNI (which is exactly why he was chosen) and the senator said: “We don’t need a weaponized DNI, we need professionals there.”

“Again, I just heard about it. I’ll try and get more information about the current state of their thinking about that position,” he continued. “If he’s somebody they want in that position permanently, he’s got a — as you all know — a lengthy road ahead of him.”

Hopefully, that "lengthy road" leads to a dead end in which Pulte's nomination is rejected. The American people deserve a DNI who will take his job seriously and keep our country safe, not a MAGA operative who will waste their time and our tax dollars chasing conspiracy theories.
