As we enter yet another week of drought conditions please, I beg you, put out water for the wildlife.
They have nothing.
No puddles.
No ponds.
No streams.
All have dried up.
Sometimes the birds are thought of and provided for.
But the nocturnal animals go unseen.
Unthought of.
No kind dishes.
Just the tantalising smell of water from a pond they may drown in, or a drain they may get trapped in.
Or a stagnant, dirty old birdbath they may get fatal fluke from.
Hedgehogs need to drink a lot of water to stay healthy. Please provide clean, fresh, safe, ground level water each evening for our precious nocturnal wildlife.
Tap water is best.
Pop a dish or two out tonight.
Dying of thirst is a terrible, painful way to die.
It should never happen to any animal, and certainly not in a country that has the safest tap water in the world.
The few minutes it takes you to fill a dish will make the difference between life and death.❤️
Britain is decaying. Blocked road drains. Potholes. Rubbish strewn streets. Dirty buildings. Road signs covered in muck. We are paying increased taxes but local and national governments and authorities aren’t doing the basics.
It’s time for a Great British Clean Up.
Half of England is in drought. 40% of us are under a hosepipe ban. Here’s what the water companies did with the 35 years they were given:
💧 2.87 billion litres leaked every single day. Nearly one in five litres put into supply, lost.
💧 A national hosepipe ban saves about 577 million litres a day. Five times less than they leak. They ration us to cover their own failure.
💧 25 reservoirs sold off. Not one major new reservoir built since 1992.
💧 England faces a 5 billion litre a day shortfall in public water supply by 2055.
💧 £85 billion paid out in dividends since privatisation.
💧 £0 of debt in 1989. Over £70 billion now. Borrowed against your bills, to pay their shareholders.
💧 Almost a third of your bill goes on servicing that debt and paying dividends. Not on pipes.
💧 Thames Water took a £3 billion rescue loan at 9.75% interest. You pay for that too.
💧 £25.3 million in pay for chief executives and finance directors last year, up on the year before, despite a bonus ban. Thames handed £4.1 million to senior staff the ban didn’t cover.
They didn’t fail to fix the pipes because it was hard. They didn’t fix them because leaking is cheaper than investing, and the money got pissed away to the assorted circus of vulture capital.
We don’t need better regulation of them. We don’t need tighter control of them. We need to own it.
Public ownership. Nothing less.
If you’re living with depression &/or anxiety, chronic illness, a bunch of not good thought pathways caused by trauma/others’ not good behaviour, miserable perimenopause, a differently-wired brain, you’re worried about climate change or you’re just feeling shite today, then hi, me too. This photo’s for your brain-it’s miniature posy from my garden in a thimble:
Firework displays during a heatwave with high risk of fires is madness
The display at about 21:30 BST on Sunday will mark the end of the event organised by Aylesbury Town Council.
After a number of people said it was "unwise, ridiculously inappropriate and madness" online, the council said it was "proactively working" with the professional fireworks display suppliers on its safety.
Thames Water's finance director given a £1,000,000 signing on bonus.
Water industry depravity hits an all time low. Their contempt for customers and the environment clearly knows no bounds.
When are govt going to intervene and put a stop to this? @andyburnham@angelaeagle

Slater Bridge, Little Langdale, Lake District, England. Where stone, water, and time meet.
A beautiful 17th-century packhorse bridge, once used by men and horses carrying slate through the valley. Built from local stone and resting partly upon a great natural boulder, it has stood here for centuries.
A little piece of old England 🏴
"Sewage spill from failing treatment plant blights first Thames bathing area. The site was named an official bathing spot 12 weeks ago. Water samples then showed E coli colonies were six times the legal limit."
Back in May I went down to Teddington to meet the Bluetits and speak to @NickFerrariLBC on @LBC about the new swimming spot on the Thames and here we are, just 12 weeks later and E. coli levels are 6 times the legal limit.

Giant Atlantic Blue Fin Tuna being landed in Port Isaac in Cornwall today. Disgusting to see these incredible fish that have only recently returned to British waters being killed for well heeled diners in expensive Cornish restaurants
Rock legend Chrissie Hynde has been left "absolutely heartbroken" as she issues an urgent plea to find her beloved dog following her disappearance in London. 🐶💔
The 74-year-old Pretenders frontwoman revealed her five-year-old Jack Russell cross, Nico, went missing over two weeks ago. The musician shared a photo of her cherished pet online while desperately appealing to members of the public for help.
"Can anyone in Great Britain tell me of the whereabouts of my little dog Nico," Hynde wrote in an emotional post. She added her fears over the pup's safety, writing: "Please, please, please if anyone has seen her at all, can you let me know." 🥺
Nico was last seen near the entrance to Silkstream Park in Colindale, north-west London. The chart-topping singer described her canine companion as having a tan coat with white markings and wearing a black collar with a silver tag. 🐾📍
The star warned anyone who spots Nico not to chase her, as the dog may be extremely nervous. Hynde previously described the pet as "very dear to me" as fans rallied on social media to share the search appeal. 🙏🏼✨
Hynde is best known as the lead singer and songwriter of The Pretenders, famous for iconic tracks such as Brass In Pocket and Don't Get Me Wrong.
