Para los que dicen que #Lanterns es “woke” por tomar el tema del racismo con John Stewart, quizá deberían conocer primero cómo fue creado el personaje.

Neal Adams (co-creador) contó que quería un Linterna Verde negro porque no le parecía creíble que el anillo buscara un reemplazo para Hal Jordan y terminara escogiendo nuevamente a otro hombre blanco (Guy Gardner). Pero Adams no quería simplemente “un Linterna Verde negro”. Quería que John fuera un graduado universitario, que tuviera una profesión, que fuera rudo y tuviera principios. Rechazaba explícitamente los estereotipos del pandillero o del jefe tribal africano.

Incluso inicialmente le dieron el nombre de Lincoln Washington. Adams sin dudarlo lo rechazó porque consideraba que sonaba como un nombre asociado a la época de la esclavitud y que podía terminar convirtiendo al personaje en algo que precisamente quería evitar. Cuando le dijeron que eligiera otro nombre, simplemente escogió John Stewart.

Eso fue lo que terminó convirtiendo a John en un personaje tan importante: su raza era parte de su identidad, pero no era lo único que lo definía. También era un hombre educado, profesional y con carácter, algo que Adams consideraba necesario en una época donde los personajes negros en los cómics estaban llenos de estereotipos.

Quizá su problema no es que #Lanterns sea "woke", sino que algunos recién están descubriendo quién es John Stewart y no pueden ocultar lo racistas que son.
