Pavel Durov once compared our situation to the Titanic after it struck the iceberg.

When the Titanic hit the iceberg, many passengers believed the ship was unsinkable. They stayed where they were. Lifeboats left half empty. By the time panic started, there was nowhere left to go.

I believe we face a similar moment.

Our ship is personal freedom and freedom of speech.

Across the world, pressure on these rights continues to grow.

• People have faced arrest or prosecution over social media posts.
• Many people in the UK, Canada, Australia, parts of Europe, and some African countries avoid using their real identities when discussing politics or criticizing governments.
• Discussions have, in some cases, led to investigations, harassment, court cases, and prison sentences.

The European Commission has proposed identity or age verification before accessing certain social media platforms. Supporters say it protects children.

This raises an important question.

If children lose access to mainstream platforms, will they become safer, or will they move to VPNs and less regulated parts of the internet?

History offers examples.

• Russia failed to stop many Telegram users despite years of blocking efforts.
• Similar situations have been reported in Iran.
• India banned Telegram for one week after leaked exam papers appeared. More than 150 million users were affected, yet the leaks moved elsewhere.

This raises another question.

Are these policies mistakes, or part of a larger shift?

Supporters of laws like the UK's Online Safety Act say they protect children.

Critics argue they increase government influence over online communication.

France has also considered expanded surveillance powers.

Supporters point to terrorism and organized crime.

Opponents warn about privacy.

Benjamin Franklin wrote:

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Whether you agree or not, the balance between security and freedom deserves serious attention.

Unlimited access to private communications does not end crime. Criminals adapt. Ordinary people lose privacy.

Pavel Durov says Telegram was built so even its developers cannot read private messages. He argues strong encryption protects ordinary people.

There have also been reports of officials misusing sensitive information in different countries.

If governments collect more personal data, who guarantees it stays protected?

Data leaks expose innocent people to fraud, blackmail, identity theft, harassment, kidnapping, and other crimes.

The more data collected, the greater the responsibility to protect it.

Another concern is selective enforcement.

When laws become so broad that perfect compliance becomes impossible, authorities gain greater discretion over who gets investigated or punished.

Pavel Durov says both Russian and French authorities pressured him over moderation.

Elon Musk says European regulators pushed for stronger moderation on X.

Regulators say they are enforcing existing laws, not political views.

AI raises the stakes.

Systems now analyze enormous amounts of personal information.

If privacy weakens, governments and corporations gain unprecedented visibility into communications, relationships, opinions, and daily life.

The Titanic passengers waited until the danger became impossible to ignore.

We should not repeat that mistake.

Once freedoms disappear, restoring them becomes difficult.

We should protect security and liberty together.

We should demand transparency from governments, responsibility from technology companies, and laws that protect fundamental rights while addressing genuine public safety concerns.

Freedom, human rights, and open debate are not permanent.

If the ship of freedom sinks, rebuilding it will be harder than protecting it today.

Do not abandon the ship.
