@zarahsultana has taken two weeks to go from the government benches back into opposition proving she has no taste for exercising real power.
At the first opportunity to demonstrate she understands the choices that come with governing she has tripped.
Knowing her protest was futile she’s also flubbed the first rule of politics and her first real test - learn to count.
She’s not representing her constituents in #CoventrySouth This is little better than student politics and unfortunately exactly what we predicted on the campaign trail. We recognise that people were going to have to see it for themselves to wake up to the reality that we have a poser not an MP.
Next time if you want real change with people who understand how to exercise power vote #SDP
@zarahsultana Hilarious, you’re actually quoting the SDP Manifesto NOT the timid Labour manifesto. Luke 15:7 states, “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent." #SDP
My message to the SDP ‘troops’ in Coventry this morning;
“It’s been a pretty wild trip the last six weeks. It started out with just Paul and I and now there are 12 of us plus more prospects in the pipeline.
We got 334 votes more than the last election and the SDP is now widely recognised as being back on the political scene in the UK.
It would’ve been fantastic to have got more votes, but when I got into this, I knew it was going to be a long haul and we now have the basis of an actual party in Coventry with policies we all actually agree with and support.
We are working for a leader who we respect and for a cause which is greater than all of us. As we saw on the streets, the support for labour is a mile wide and an inch deep. We have always maintained that Reform without Nigel Farage cannot last - sooner or later he will fall out with his colleagues and he won’t put in the hard work of developing consistent policy across different silos. In short our time is not yet here, but it will come. (if you have noticed, he’s already nicking our soundbites family-community-country)
So there are many positives to draw upon but the most important is that we are a group and we can grow on the basis that we have the right policy prescriptions for what ails our country.
Keir Starmer will not be, in my estimation, be an effective executive and there is simply no new money to throw at problems - the international bond market will ensure fiscal discipline. Without pragmatic policies, disappointment will set in soon. This will be our opportunity.
I’m going to take a couple of weeks off and visit the remains of the eastern and western Roman Empires which at one time looked like they would never fall either … but they did.
I’m looking forward to meeting up in August and I will try to organise some dates for the inaugural meeting of the SDP in Coventry!
It just remains for me to thank everybody, but especially Paul, Adam and Micheal who were the 1st to join in on our adventure!
Best wishes,”
Alastair

Our politics were moderate. We both believed that if you worked 40 hours a week 46 weeks a year you want to be able to afford a modest home of your own. We felt that the government should be competent and not expand its scope beyond what it was capable of delivering successfully.
But around January 2024, I decided that I was going to take the plunge. My oldest friend and now parliamentary agent, Paul Crilly, and I sat down in February ‘24 to begin to discuss how we would go about things. The SDP in Coventry did not exist at that time.
In 2023 I met @WilliamClouston of the #SDP and over the next 12 months we had dozens of conversations & I became convinced that standing on the sidelines was no longer an option. My wife was concerned about potential reputational damage as UK politics appears like a piranha tank.
Some reflections on the 2024 campaign. Like many of you, I’ve bemoaned the capabilities of many of our MP’s. The nadir for me came in 2019 when Jeremy Corbyn parachuted a young lady with several years experience working at Primark into the safe Labour seat of #CoventrySouth
Industrial jobs, in contrast to winner takes all software, spread wealth in working class communities. Higher wages bring money back into the city. As JFK said, “A rising tide raises all boats” and the more money we bring into the city the more resources there are to fix problems
@SJRichmond89 Between Ms Sultana’s focus on Gaza & Mr Richmond obsessing over US politics, AOC & Supreme Court Fascism (Too many episodes of the West Wing?) voters in #CoventrySouth could be forgiven for thinking no candidates cares about them. I do. Vote #AlastairMellonSDP on 4th July
Yes. Read the SDP manifesto. It won't take long. And it's, like the lady said, brilliant, innovative and yet rooted in common sense. It also happens to sit where around 50% of Britons sit. Read it. What have you got to lose beyond thirty minutes of your time?

Be a patriot. Read it. Disagree? You've lost 40 minutes. Agree? Join the long march to reclaim, rebuild and rejuvenate our country.

As a Labour majority looks likely this will be sobering news for Rachel Reeves as she considers where to squeeze. #CoventrySouth needs an MP who understands business & wealth creation to insulate the City from the tough years ahead - with the right team we can still thrive #SDP
My Father served in both the Royal Engineers and the Black Watch and my agent’s son is in the Army so we both share an appreciation of the tremendous work that the forces do and the skills that people acquire during their service

Today we celebrate the work, integrity & sacrifices of our Armed Forces & their families. The military-Civilian Covenant implies & encompasses mutual responsibilities & expectations that go beyond a simple contract; let’s be honest - all too often we’re letting our veterans down.
Reform have no ground game in #CoventrySouth Zero. Zip. Nada. Furious white males over 45 that I talk on the street are eager to tell me they will vote Reform. I can tell you they are going to be livid when they find out there is no there, there in the Reform Party.
@FUDdaily This is an astute summary of the choices faced by the electorate. It will surprise no one that Nigel Farage and his high level saturation bombing is making all the headlines. But in #CoventrySouth I’m faced by a paper candidate from Reform
