“When I watch Kobbie, I sometimes remember Zidane. Not because they play exactly the same, but because of the way they receive the ball. There is this calmness when the pressure comes. They don’t panic. They wait for the defender to commit and then suddenly they are away.

“When I watch Enzo, I remember Xabi Alonso. He wants to see the whole pitch. He is already thinking about where the next pass should go before he receives the ball. He wants to move the opposition with his passing, switch the play, find the forward and arrive around the box.

“Kobbie is different.

“He receives the ball and his first thought is often, ‘Can I turn?’

“And if he turns, you have a problem.

“He can take the ball under pressure, use his body, carry it through the first line and suddenly United are attacking. That ability is difficult to teach because it comes from confidence and natural awareness.

“Enzo gives you more numbers in the final third. He can score, assist and play the final pass.

“But Mainoo gives you something that statistics don’t always show.

“He can change the speed of the game with one action.

“You can have 60 or 70 percent possession, but if you cannot escape pressure, the possession means nothing. Kobbie can receive the ball with someone behind him, turn away from that pressure and carry the team forward.

“With Enzo, you feel the game being organised.

“With Mainoo, you feel the game opening up.

“And that is why I like the comparison. They are both very talented, but they solve different problems.

“Enzo wants to control the game with the ball.

“Mainoo wants to control what happens after he receives it.

“If I’m building a midfield, I don’t want two players who do exactly the same thing.

“I want players who can give me different solutions.

“And Kobbie has one solution that every coach loves when the game becomes difficult, give him the ball.

“He doesn’t hide.

“He asks for it.”
