Since we keep compromising cheap affordability for long term durability, we will keep falling off.
This house in Kerala is 1,520 square feet on an odd-shaped 11-cent plot and it has two courtyard sky courts, a double roof system, perforated brick walls facing west to catch wind and block harsh afternoon sun, and timber joinery throughout. The brick is not decorative. The perforations are calculated to manage airflow and solar gain on a single storey structure, which attracts more heat than multi-storey buildings. The double roof, a flat slab beneath and a truss roof stretched over the entire structure, creates an interspace that absorbs heat before it reaches the living spaces. Every material decision in this house is doing a specific job.
The courtyard is where family life actually happens. It is where the sound of rain is heard from inside the house, where children grow up, where people sit together without planning to. We have removed it from our homes entirely and replaced it with small verandas that face the road for the neighbours to see. We build for appearance and we build cheap, and then we wonder why nothing lasts and why our homes do not feel like homes.
A house is not four walls and a roof. The people living inside it are the whole point.

Btw, I’m also looking for craftsmen (or women) that can build stuff like this in Lagos (the ceiling designs)
Reply in the comments with something you’ve done before and I’ll send a DM.
If you’re not the craftsman, pls retweet so it gets to the right audience 🙏🏼
