Biological Science PhD candidate at Ecology & Biodiversity Centre @IMASUTAS understanding the Mechanics of stability for degraded turf-dominated reef states
My first PhD data chapter is out, and my first paper as corresponding author! Published in Marine Ecology Progress Series ๐
We show how kelp loss and urchin grazing interact to drive turf algae expansion on temperate reefs.

We examined kelp cover & urchin densities in relation to turf proliferation (Tasmanian temperate reefs). When kelps are lost, competitive release allows turfs to establish. However, turf persistence appears dependent on elevated urchin herbivory.

Iโm heading to Beaker Street Festival this August as one of the official Roving Scientists โ keep an eye out for me at the bar! Itโs Tassieโs wildest celebration of science, art, and connection. 12โ24 August across Hobart + beyond. ๐๏ธ Full program at https://t.co/bzPqS1khXy
Fieldwork โ
After months in the water, my team and I finished sampling 36 sites across 6 locations, from Lizard Island to Tasmania!
Grateful for the epic crew, wild weather, and unforgettable dives.
Next up: data deep dive ๐๐ ๐ฑ

In our warming oceans, marine species are moving into new areas and โre-engineeringโ or often destroying those ecosystems, but scientists say the paradox of overfishing sustainably can help: https://t.co/WiUqALNQew
Excited to present my first data chapter experiment on turf proliferation on temperate reefs at @AMSAconf ! Exploring the dynamic interactions between kelp, long-spined urchins, and turf algae, and how these shifts are reshaping our marine ecosystems. @IMASUTAS
Dr. Beth Strain @bethaniey15 delivered an inspiring talk at the @AMSAconf conference on the urgent need to restore endangered marine communities. Her insights into innovative restoration techniques offer hope for the future of our oceans. @IMASUTAS#MarineRestoration
Just attended an incredible talk by @ScottDLing at @AMSAconf He discussed the fascinating role of predators in exerting top-down control on long-spine urchins and the potential to restore balance in marine ecosystems. Truly eye-opening! ๐ @IMASUTAS#Temperatereef#UrchinControl
๐จ PhD student @UTAS Paula Andrea Ruiz Ruiz focusing on Australian reef recovery, studying turf algal states that potentially signal reef collapse. Just set up experiments at 5 sites around Orpheus Island. Data collection begins in January!

๐๐ We are thrilled to announce the successful deployment of our underwater experiments around Orpheus Island Research Station! ๐๐ฌ Huge shoutout to our dedicated team for their hard work and passion. Exciting discoveries await beneath the waves! ๐๐ #MarineResearch#OrpheusIs
๐ Tomorrow, June 4th, is #Seaweed Day!
๐ฑWhy should we care? Because seaweeds support marine ecosystems, provide #food and #habitat for marine life, and offer numerous benefits to human #health and #economic activities.

New @IocUnesco report with contributions from around 100 scientists from nearly 30 countries shows that:
๐ด The rate of ocean warming doubled in 20 years
๐ด The rate of sea level rise doubled in 30 years

"๐๐ฌ Exciting news! Our team just completed the collection of our underwater experiments in Tasmania! ๐ Can't wait to dive into the data and unveil the results soon! Stay tuned for some groundbreaking discoveries! ๐ #IMASUTAS#PhDjourney#Tasmania#TeamWork
Gametophytes of the acutely vulnerable kelp Macrocystis pyrifera exposed to 10.5-23.8ยฐC revealed a fertilization bottleneck (18.8-23.6ยฐC), emphazising urgent conservation for this ecologically vital species. #ClimateChange#KelpConservation#OceanHealth
