Five documents every adult needs to have.
Most people do not think about this until it is too late. By then, the people you love are the ones who pay for it.
The first is a will. Without one, the state decides what happens to everything you own. That process is slow, expensive and emotionally draining for the people you leave behind. Do not let the state make decisions you could have made yourself.
The second is a beneficiary designation on every account. Your retirement account, your bank account, your life insurance. If you have recently gotten married, divorced or had children, go and check who your beneficiaries are right now. This one overrides your will, so itβs more important than most people realise.
The third is a power of attorney. This document names who makes financial decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so yourself. Without it, even your closest family member may not have the legal authority to act for you.
The fourth is a healthcare directive, sometimes called a living will. This tells everyone what kind of medical care you want if you cannot speak for yourself. It removes an impossible burden from the people who love you most.
The fifth is what some people call a "you are gone, now what" document. This is not a legal document, but it is just as important. It is a personal information packet that explains where your accounts are, what your passwords are, who to call and what you want done. It takes an enormous amount of pressure off your loved ones at the worst possible moment in their lives.
None of these are pleasant to think about. All of them are acts of love.
