The NUC vs SURCON Standoff: How It Affects FUTA Surveying Students

Since May 2025, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) have been at odds over who has the authority to accredit Surveying and Geoinformatics programmes.

On 20th May 2025, the NUC issued a circular stating that SURCON would no longer conduct accreditation of university programmes (see the first image). SURCON, however, maintains that its enabling Act gives it the statutory responsibility to regulate the surveying profession, including matters relating to professional recognition.

What does this mean for FUTA students?

As a result of this dispute, graduates of FUTA's Surveying and Geoinformatics programme currently face uncertainty regarding registration with SURCON, which is required to practise as a licensed surveyor in Nigeria. This situation affects many current students as well as graduates from 2023.

It goes beyond FUTA.

This issue extends to universities across the country. While students have fulfilled their academic requirements, the ongoing disagreement between the two regulatory bodies has created uncertainty about their pathway into professional practice.

The second and third images show the current status of affected universities.

For institutions such as FUTA, IMSU, ABU and others whose professional accreditation is due, graduates after the expiration of that accreditation may face challenges obtaining professional recognition. For institutions such as LAUTECH, FUOYE, Bowen University, UNIABUJA and others, the situation is even more concerning, as their programmes are currently not recognised by SURCON.

In one sentence: Two regulatory bodies are in a dispute over surveying accreditation, but the people bearing the consequences are the students whose future careers depend on a timely resolution.
