Novel idea: Comedian at the top of his game is given an absurd amount of money by Netflix to do a special. It's way beyond fuck you money, so he has a bit of an identity crisis after realizing he never has to work again. Finally, he decides to shake things up.

Instead of doing a standup routine with funny jokes, and instead of doing anticomedy where unfunny jokes are ironically funny, he decides to be boring.

He reads from his microwave instruction manual, he sits on the floor in silence for a minute, he talks in detail about what ekements of granola detract from the experience of breakfast (but are necessary in a mid-day snack).

The crowd in the stadium boos aggressively, but the show is immediately praised as a masterpiece of ironic meta-meta commentary. The London Review of Books declares the comedian "succeeds in an unprecedented display of naked sincerity that becomes a commentary on sincerity-as-medium for a world starved for authenticity. The world has a new Jonathan Swift, and our long thirst for genius is finally quenched."

Stunned and encouraged, the comedian decides to try again. He does a sitcom, it's a success. Then a buddy cop movie, it's the number one blockbuster for 47 weeks straight.

At this point the comedian, richer than Midas, decides he can only continue doing this with integrity as an artist. Otherwise it is not worth doing. So he decides, as he finds other art forms to do badly, he must also live badly, or else his work is mere clever parody.

So as he does rom-com and late Victorian realist novel and rock opera, the critics' acclaim accrues but his lifestyle worsens. Mansions are swapped for large houses in good areas that slowly decend past shack in the ghetto to homeless shelter and denizen of homeless under bridges. Michelin restaurants turn into dumpster diving as he releases Korean drama and Mongolian throat singing ams woke cold thoughtpiece in The Jacobin.

Finally he is found dead of a meth overdose in a ditch, lungs full of rainwater.

The critics are not pleased with this last performance. The New York Times obituary is titled "The Death of a Talentless Hack", which SHOULD be the title of the novel, but it's actually called "This Book is Called the Title of the Obituary at the End".
