What followed the play I posted earlier was one of my favorite intersections of sports drama and broadcasting brilliance.

Game 5. Tigers up, 3-1, in the series. They’re up, 5-4, in the eighth. Second and third and one out. Kirk Gibson at the plate against Goose Gossage.

Vin Scully lays out for 1:35, just letting the father of TV baseball directors, Harry Coyle, paint pictures with the background wash of a delirious Tiger Stadium crowd.

Then he punctuates it with as good an off-the-cuff close out as I’ve ever heard going to break.

It’s worth your time.
