On November 14, 1943, Tiny or Fast Phil participated in the famous Boston College - Harvard Football Classic at the stadium, carrying the ball 4 times for 24 yards and was a spark for the comeback as the game ended in a 6 - 6 tie.

He entered the Navy during World War II and was fortunately selected for their V12 program, attended Harvard University and played football in 1943.

He grew up in Brighton, attended Brighton High School and won the Scanlon Award for the best athlete as a star football and track and field
