THE RAVINES AWAKEN

Heavy rains triggered by an intense frontal system have activated ravines in Tocopilla, Antofagasta Region, prompting immediate evacuations. The mudslide has become so violent it is sweeping vehicles away. A Red Alert has been declared as authorities rush to prevent catastrophe. SENAPRED activated the SAE emergency cell phone alert system urging residents to evacuate immediately.

SIX SECTORS, ONE ORDER

Evacuation orders cover six critical sectors: Almirante Riveros, O'Higgins, Pacífico Norte, Tres Marías, Cinco de Octubre and 18 de Septiembre. Earlier orders also included Huella Tres Puntas and Colón. Over 2,000 customers are without power. Schools across multiple regions are suspended. Five healthcare facilities are non-operational, with patients transferred to other centres. Authorities urge calm and ask residents to take their pets to safety.

PRISONERS MOVED TO SAFETY

In an unprecedented operation, 540 inmates were transferred from Tocopilla's detention centre to Antofagasta prison. Gendarmerie and police coordinated the mass relocation, as the municipal government provided buses. Authorities warn that the situation remains volatile as rainfall persists across northern Chile. The government has extended the Preventive Emergency declaration between Arica and Coquimbo. This is a stark reminder of the destructive power of climate extremes in one of the world's most arid regions.
