Just to clarify my position on the whole bamboo scaffolding debate:
1. I absolutely love bamboo scaffolding – no question about it.
2. Strength, low cost, and ease of transport make it an ideal and highly practical resource in Hong Kong. On top of that, it has been used here for many decades and forms an important part of our city’s culture and heritage.
3. That said, while I’m genuinely fond of it, I am by no means an expert on the full biological or physical properties of bamboo. When I’ve described it as “flammable” in interviews, that has been based purely on gut feeling and a cautious “perhaps” when pressed by media outlets. Although bamboo is far from perfect, I do NOT believe it was the cause of the Tai Po fires, nor that it spread the blaze upwards and across the towers at Wang Fuk Court. Hong Kong has been using bamboo scaffolding for longer than most of us have been alive, and in all that time we have never seen a flood of reports blaming bamboo scaffolding for starting or fuelling major fires. If it were truly such a liability, how on earth have we managed to keep using it for so long?
4. Hong Kong may well decide to switch to metal scaffolding one day, but, like a great deal of things in my life - c’est la vie, that isn’t my decision to make. It will come down entirely to whether there is a genuine, proven need.
5. I’m an IT and digital-media professional, not an architect, structural engineer, or construction expert.
Thank you! 😎🙏🏻
Godspeed.

Heartbroken by the devastating fire in Hong Kong. Everyone affected is in our thoughts and we are thankful for the first responders. Apple is donating to relief efforts on the ground.
@JoyceSpct Hi Joyce, thanks for reaching out.
1. Yes, these are my videos.
2. Sure, please go ahead and use them with credit to me.
3. The videos were mainly filmed at the pedestrian / bicycle path near Nam Wan Road (also opposite Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School or WSCSS) 4:25-5:45pm
Batch 2 of videos: One of the most shocking things to ever witness at Tai Po, HK. Burning buildings at Wang Cheong House, Wang Fuk Court. #taipo#hk#hongkong#fire#disaster#wangfukcourt
@TWytrychowski Unfortunately, this is Hong Kong where space is scarce. Many things are packed together in one of the most densely populated cities, if not THE most densely populated cities in the world.
@CanucksFan80 Hey Rajeev. Actually, we live in Hung Hom. Tai Po is my workplace, which I have been a part of for the past 15 years. Agreed…just surreal!
