There is a well-known traditional Zulu song that goes:

“We Mathananazana, awuyeke isoka lami; awuyeke indoda yami.”

English Translation:

“You old female baboon, leave my charmer alone; leave my man alone.”

When this song is carefully analysed, it reveals a hidden layer of ridicule and social commentary.

Traditionally, the song was sung by virgin women when they saw an older woman, who was no longer a virgin, pursuing or becoming romantically involved with a man who was also courting a virgin woman.

The expression “We Mathananazana” is not simply a form of address. Within this traditional context, Mathananazana refers to an old female baboon, making the opening line a deliberate insult rather than a neutral statement.

The comparison is drawn from indigenous observations of baboon society. An old female baboon that has become separated from the main troop is often seen living alone among rocky cliffs. While she no longer occupies the same position as the younger females within the troop, adult male baboons may occasionally visit her before leaving again. This behaviour became a cultural metaphor.

Thus, the older woman who takes or pursues the virgin woman’s boyfriend is likened to that solitary old female baboon. The metaphor suggests that she is not viewed as the man’s primary or enduring partner but rather as someone with whom he spends only a temporary period before returning elsewhere.

The song therefore carries a strong element of mockery. Rather than merely asking another woman to leave a man alone, it uses an indigenous animal metaphor to belittle her, comparing her to an isolated old female baboon. The insult reflects traditional Zulu symbolism, in which observations of nature were used to express social attitudes and moral commentary.🍃🫶🏽
