Transgender people do not exist to win elections.

No other medical reality is put to a public vote. No other group is told their bodies, healthcare, and existence are a matter of opinion. We do not hold national debates on whether epilepsy is real. We do not crowdsource views on cancer treatment. We do not ask the public to “discuss” whether diabetes should exist.

Yet when it comes to trans people, suddenly everyone is invited to have an opinion on someone else’s body.

That should alarm everyone.

Being transgender is not a political position. It is a lived reality recognised by medicine, psychology, and every serious health authority in the world. Turning that reality into a culture war issue is not about safeguarding or concern. It is about power. It is about using a small, vulnerable group as a tool to mobilise fear and win votes.

When politicians ask the public to argue over trans people’s lives, they are not asking for debate. They are outsourcing harm. They are normalising the idea that some people’s rights are conditional, temporary, and open to removal if enough noise is made.

That does not stop with trans people.

Once a society accepts that one group’s medical care and legal protections can be voted on, everyone becomes vulnerable. Women. Disabled people. Queer people. Anyone whose existence can be framed as inconvenient or controversial.

Human rights are not a popularity contest. Healthcare is not a referendum. And people do not need permission from strangers to exist.

Trans people are not a talking point. They are not a wedge issue. They are not a strategy.

They are people.
