Sakon Nakhon Orders Recount After Vote Tally Exceeds Voter Turnout
Election officials in Sakon Nakhon conducted a recount at a polling station in Constituency 1 on the night of February 8 after observers found that the vote totals written on the tally board exceeded the number of voters by 105.
The incident occurred at Polling Station No. 63 in the Nong Daeng community, Mueang district, after polls closed for the MP election and referendum. While 440 voters had cast ballots, the figures recorded on the official tally board showed 545 votes.
Following objections from observers, the Sakon Nakhon Provincial Election Commission director, Jaraskwan Chaorua, went to the site and ordered a verification process. Officials first confirmed that the number of ballots in the box matched the number of voters, then carried out a recount of the ballots.
The recount confirmed that the discrepancy stemmed from a clerical error in recording the results on the tally board, not from extra ballots. The corrected figures were annotated and signed by polling officials on the official tally form. The recount did not alter the overall outcome of the vote.
The Election Commission said the error was likely caused by human error during counting and has launched an investigation to determine responsibility and whether similar mistakes occurred at other polling stations.
Unofficial results in Sakon Nakhon, with about 95% counted as of early Monday, showed the Kla Tham Party winning three seats, Pheu Thai securing three seats, and Bhumjaithai taking one seat.
