Katie Blair, who helped lead the fight for marriage equality in this state, wrote about what that proclamation actually costs her. Before Obergefell, if her wife got sick, she could have been turned away at the hospital door. They couldn't file taxes together. They couldn't share insurance as spouses. Those weren't symbolic injuries. They were specific, documented legal harms that fell on real Indiana families.

Blair makes a point Braun apparently missed: the "nuclear family" ideal he's enshrining in a state proclamation is a mid-20th century suburban invention, not an ancient institution. It emerged when Americans left multigenerational rural households to work corporate jobs in postwar cities. The self-contained mom-dad-two-kids unit was a product of the 1950s economy, not millennia of human family structure. The extended networks of grandparents, aunts, cousins, and chosen family that raised children across human history don't qualify under the governor's gold standard either.

Braun's proclamation doesn't just exclude LGBTQ+ Hoosier families. It leaves out single parents. Non-biological parents. Grandparents raising grandchildren. Couples who choose not to have kids. Families that look like most of Indiana but don't match a postwar magazine spread. What exactly is being celebrated here - and who is the government telling, again, that they don't measure up?
