@CycleNott @HarryHamishGray Yes, it happens all the time. Some local authorities receive far more from claims than they pay out to individuals seeking compensation. However, what cannot be recouped are the routine maintenance jobs: paving slabs cracked by lorry drivers half parking on footways, etc.

@KateGavron Even worse than either of those, arguably: pre-mixed drinks… Strawberry daiquiri mix, Smirnoff Ice. Fortunately they had left two large shopping bags (which it had all arrived in) otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to get it all off the beach.

@jackthurston @geograph_bi Indeed - you can still be prosecuted for dangerous / careless driving on a FP/BW or even public nuisance (common law). There are also regulations specifically on driving on RoWs - speed limited to 5mph, for instance. Plus landowner liability would doubtless restrict usage.

@jackthurston @geograph_bi Sure: assuming land owner is NT, I imagine they wouldn’t ever want the 4X4 brigade returning to destroy it. Just pointing out that you could still get permission to drive up it as with any private path! A McDonalds drive through is on private land, not a public highway.

@jackthurston @geograph_bi Depends on the landowner, surely? Bridleway rights guarantees permanent access for foot/bike/horse but can’t the landowner also choose to allow people to drive on their land at certain times, by permission?

@ianwalker @NickHowes13 Hmm. Interesting. Perhaps there is something in the Commons Register for CL66 that restricts access only to certain rights holders? (I.e. general access rights are not included).
