Some years ago I was travelling to Makurdi from the North (more than 12 years now). I was already in Lafia in the evening around past 6 pm. Lafia to Makurdi is about 100km. That period, that route used to be dangerous after 6 pm. I knew it. But as a moving man, you have to keep moving. I needed to be in Makurdi.

As I got to the outskirts of Lafia, I noticed the car wasn't accelerating well. It was misfiring. After a few minutes, it got better and it was going smoothly for about 30 minutes before it started again. It did that for 5 minutes and the car stopped completely. Ahhhhh. Tried starting it multiple times but it didn't start. I stopped trying because I didn't want to run down the battery. There was nothing I didn't think about that day. This time I was already halfway between Lafia and Makurdi. One of the scary sections of the road that used to be known for the bad guys.

I had my backpack with my laptop, tablet, hard drive and some essential stuff in the car. I just carried it, locked the car and moved into the bush. There was a bit of an elevated side from where you could see the road. I went and sat there watching the road and everywhere watchable. I had concluded I'd sleep there because no vehicle would stop for you on that road by that time and I didn't want to expose myself in the open.

After about 20 minutes, on the other side of the expressway, I noticed the bad guys, about four of them coming to the main road. They had these hunters' flashlights on their heads. As they stepped foot on the road, the first thing they did was to surround the car. They tried to force the doors open but I had them locked. They abandoned the car and used some heavy woods to block the road. It was a sharp bend so a blind spot that you wouldn't see from afar. They waited for roughly 20 minutes until a car came. They robbed all the passengers. Another car came and they did the same thing. I think they robbed about three cars before fleeing into the bush. Back then it was robbery not kidnapping.

When they fled, I waited for about an hour, went back to the car, tried to start it and after about 20 minutes of trial and error, it started. Engaged the gear and started moving. Worked fine for about five minutes and misfired till I got to Makurdi. I think at some point the headlamps seized sef. Lol. Man life no be wasa.
