All this talk of "nepo babies" is very revealing. First of all, it's a natural human impulse to want to provide for the next generation and to pass on your knowledge and skills to your children. A Michelin-starred father is going to teach his son to cook. That's not nepotism.

Of course there's something to be said about mediocre or talentless boys and girls who are enabled by their parents to do absolutely fuck all and occupy positions they don't deserve--and that someone from a lowlier background, who has worked harder and has greater talent, would do a much better job of occupying. Really, you should look at such people and think it's just an indictment of their inborn nature and character. With all that money and all those opportunities, look how little they amount to. Such people are everywhere.

But what I think the "nepo baby" discourse gets at is just how uneasy we are with biology. Not just the notion that talents are unequally distributed at birth, but also that the unequal distribution of talents accumulates over time, so that the spoils of athletic talent etc. continue to be divided among the same people. Really, what we're terrified of is the biological basis of aristocracy.
