The Death of PFPs?

A rising tide lifts all boats.

But as Warren Buffett once famously said:

"Only when the tide goes out do you discover who's been swimming naked"

This powerful quote begs the question...

Have most PFP projects been swimming naked?

Personally, I would lean towards a resounding yes: most of them certainly have.

Now, what does this mean? Were PFPs merely a fad?

Will these projects ever recover?

Will some recover?

Before we delve into these questions, let's take a step back and redefine PFP projects. 🔎

🔷 Redefining PFP projects 🔷

PFPs, or profile-picture projects, simply categorize NFT projects whose art works great as online avatars.

Or rather, whose art is typically adopted as an online avatar.

Admittedly, having an NFT as an online avatar (or digital identity) can be somewhat cringeworthy, even inviting ridicule. But isn't it better to showcase one's art rather than hiding it in a digital wallet?

To help illustrate this, let's picture Susan. 🧍🏽‍♀️

Susan, a 50-year-old wealthy art collector, boasts a vast collection of hundreds of artworks. Yet, despite her house spanning 8000 sq feet, she only has 40 paintings and canvases on display.

The most prominent and impressive painting occupies her living room, right next to her dinner table. 🖼️🏠

Every other week, Susan's friends and neighbors (most of whom are also affluent), gather at her place for dinner and often inquire about the massive and striking artwork right beside them. 🗣️

Now, ponder for a moment...

Which artwork is receiving the most value?

Which artwork is truly seen and appreciated?

Is it the giant painting in the living room, the rolled canvases in Susan's attic, or the prints she has stored in a storage facility?

It's obvious: it's the giant painting in the living room.

To me, this perfectly depicts what PFPs are all about:

Artwork with a massive exposure boost.

🔷 PFPs in the digital age 🔷

Now, consider the vast amount of time spent online.

According to research, the average American spends 7 hours and 4 minutes staring at a screen each day. Globally, the average screen time per day is just shy of 7 hours.

Some studies even show that Gen Z's spend up to 9 hours on their phones or tablets. 📱💻

So in reality, having a compelling PFP is not just similar to displaying one's greatest artwork in the living room.

It's actually even more significant than that.

Go ahead, invite all your friends and family over for dinner. You'll still not come close to the eyes your PFP is getting on the daily.

But let's be clear, having your art seen is not enough. While exposure is great (and important), there must be others merits to it for it to be valuable.

So yes, most PFPs have been swimming naked.

Most projects will never recover.

But with that said, let there be no doubt...

PFPs are not a fad. PFPs are not dead.

Nor will they ever die.

The living room painting will always reign supreme.
