Edward Shimoli: The Man Who Feared Freedom
Edward Maina Shimoli, popularly known as โThe Jackal,โ was one of Kenyaโs most notorious criminals. He was associated with violent robberies and became infamous for repeatedly escaping from prison, including Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.
In 2007, after years behind bars, Shimoli was reportedly released. But in a shocking twist, he allegedly refused to leave prison because he feared that people outside wanted him dead. Eventually, he had to walk out.
He reportedly converted to Islam, adopted the name Mohammed Shaban Maina, and tried to start a new life. But his freedom was short-lived. On August 26, 2007, he was reportedly found murdered along Kangundo Road, with his hands tied and body riddled with bullets.
The man who had escaped prison several times could not escape his final fate.
His story leaves one haunting question: Was prison the only place where Edward Shimoli was truly safe?
