@CaraPac46808618 @jan_murray As a former SW I would worry if a child said s/he wasn’t feeling safe talking to the parents. And that would warrant intervention. Gentle, but still intervention. And you would have to explain to the parents the reason for the intrusion in the family. So you see, no way out

I trained as a teacher initially - qualifying in 1998.

The first thing I learned in safeguarding training?

If a child says they want to tell you something but asks you not to tell their parents, you explain that you can't promise confidentiality.

Now It's one thing not to tell a parent that their child forgot their PE kit or had a minor falling-out with a friend.

It's quite another to keep secret the fact that a child is questioning their gender.

Because gender distress is a significant safeguarding issue. Children who are questioning their gender may also be experiencing other emotional or mental health difficulties, and in most cases their parents/carers are the people who know them best and are best placed to support them.

Yet we're now seeing school policies that encourage staff to keep information about a child's gender questioning from parents. And MPs advocating for policies that would reinforce that approach.

Schools should be setting the gold standard for safeguarding, not lowering the bar.

And if we accept lower safeguarding standards in schools, where else will we accept them?

Signed up for a bowel cancer screening programme so got my kit 2 weeks ago
