IRCC Clarification: Closed Work Permit & Job Loss 🇨🇦
Q: If someone loses their job after a closed work permit is approved, do they lose status after 90 days?
A (IRCC): ❌ No.
As long as the closed work permit is still valid, the person may legally remain in Canada until the permit expires, even if they are no longer employed.
However:
• They cannot work for the old employer
• They cannot work for a new employer without a new work permit
If they want to work again 👉 they must secure a new job offer and apply for a new work permit.
Restoration only applies if status is actually lost.
Key takeaway:
📌 Job loss ≠ loss of status
📌 Status is tied to permit validity, not employment
