This is 10-year-old Sophie Wang. Sophie was killed in her home at Carrara on Tuesday. Today, her mother faced court charged with Sophie's murder. Sophie is the 10th Australian child killed this year.
I've been documenting the killing of children and women for almost nine years now. Watching Australian child lives erased never gets easier - regardless of the perpetrator's gender or relationship to the victim.
Sophie was in year five at a Gold Coast school. She was adored by her mates. I cannot fathom how her circle of friends - or her family, especially her dad - will cope with her murder.

This is 28-year-old Kierra-lea Jensen. On Monday, Keirra was killed in her home at Leichardt, Qld. Her male partner is charged with Keirra's murder.
Kierra is the 52nd Australian woman killed this year.
Kierra worked with her dad, she was helping raise her stepson and she was a keen animal lover and dedicated to her family.
“She had the biggest heart and always tried her best to help anyone in need,” a friend told media today.
“She would sit with you for hours listening and always had advice on whatever situation you were going through.
“She always had a smile on her face and was always laughing.”

This is Chaithanya (Swetha) Madhagani. Today Swetha's body was found in a bin on the side of a road in Buckley, Victoria.
It's believed she was murdered by her husband who has fled the country with her child.
Swetha is the 18th woman killed this year and the third killed this month.
After murdering Swetha and leaving Australia, he contacted her family in Victoria to tell them about Swetha’s death.
“She was one of the sweetest girls ever,” a friend told media.
“Everyone would want to have Swetha in their lives.”
I can't believe I'm recording the 18th femicide in Australia in just nine or so weeks but also I can believe it. Why? Because this is the way in our country. Women die, men kill, nothing changes.
We are recording two femicides a week at the moment and fuck why isn't this changing?
What sort of country do we live in where men still feel empowered to murder women?
It's not all men but it almost always is a man.
So men, do something about this. Male violence is a male problem, not a women's problem.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been holding my breath. Hopeful Ballarat local Samantha Murphy would be found alive and safe. Sadly and maddeningly, this was not to be.
A man has today been charged with her murder. It’s believed Samantha did not know her alleged killer. Samantha is the 15th Australian woman killed this year.
Samantha – a 51-year-old mum to three children – set out for a run on February 4 from her home in Ballarat East.
She was a seasoned athlete who knew the area well. She never made it home.
For the past month and three days, police have been trying to locate her. Today they arrested and charged a young man over her death. Her body remains missing.
It’s almost always the way when women disappear in Australia that their missing is deliberate. Samantha’s story has been across the media for many weeks – a stark contrast, dare I say, to the Indigenous women who are disappeared but whom we rarely hear a word about. No one begrudges Samantha that spotlight but I hope for the day when other missing and killed women capture our collective attention.
At some point we need to talk about the ongoing epidemic of gendered violence against women.
‘Gendered violence’ is a term which does not sit well for so many people in Australia.
Just look at the comments on my She Matters posts for evidence of this discomfort. But we do need to talk about it.
We do need to talk about the 15 women killed, allegedly by males in the past nine or so week's.
It’s a lot of women’s lives erased in such a short time. How is this not a national conversation?
Like everyone of the 14 women before her, Samantha’s erasure is a national shame and yet so many Australians are incapable of taking part in the conversations, struggles, movements and decisions needed to change the story.
I hope the murder of Samantha is enough to drive the change we need. But I know deep down this will not be so.
