The Ottoman Empire was the most formidable enemy European Christendom ever had.

Contemporary Europeans called the Ottoman Empire “the present terror of the world.”

Its huge armies, its endless resources. Never again would Europe encounter any external enemy like this.

ottoman cultural influence in europe is unprecedented too

in 1651 la varenne publishes his book telling the french to stop putting sugar on meat and start making cakes for the end of the meal

by then ottoman sultans had been finishing their banquets with perfectly layered syrupy baklava for almost two centuries

and right as france discovers modern cuisine it also discovers coffee, made fashionable in paris by the ottoman envoy soliman aga in 1669

then the french copied the kahvehane of istanbul and turned them into the cafes

so today almost every "european lifestyle" brag and "the american mind cannot comprehend this" post has a piece of ottoman culture in it

@Hellenoturk @47Tolkien Obviously they dont count

[الفاتحة 📿 @houseofqahwa]

If the Ottomans were in China they'd probably survive until the day of judgment - but defeating over a 100 states just in Europe and surviving every empire in Asia and Africa from medieval warfare to modernity then falling after 623 long years is unprecedented in human history.
