What's the practical effect of this rule?

By Christmas of 2028, if the gas furnace in your home fails, you may have to pay hundreds to thousands of dollars for new equipment and ventilation to comply with DOE's new regulation.

Again, the rule is ill-conceived, unlawful, analytically unsupportable, and anti-consumer.

The challenge brought against the rule isn't, as claimed here, about maintaining the status quo. It's about ensuring that *all* consumers have access to efficient and affordable heating equipment that their home is designed for. This rule removes those options.

This furnace rule makes it illegal to replace 55% of the indoor gas furnaces currently installed in homes. Of those, more than a third (34%) will be worse off because they'll pay more over time to comply with the rule. This includes upfront appliance and installation and energy costs.

The market is becoming more efficient every year. More people are choosing higher-efficency gas furnaces, and we need to encourage and accelerate that trend through consumer-friendly policies. AGA and the natural gas utility industry supports greater furnace efficiency through billions of dollars of continual investment.

However, this furnace rule presents unacceptably profound impacts
on consumers, is analytically and procedurally defective, eliminates consumer energy choices,
and increases energy use for many homes that will be forced to switch to electric heating appliances.
