Adolf Hitler invoked this line in interviews, praising the God "who let iron grow" and wanted "no slaves," arming men with saber, sword, and spear

It embodied his vision of a martial, freedom-fighting German spirit

The poem was written in 1812 by Ernst Moritz Arndt (during the Napoleonic Wars) & was a calling to Germans to resist tyranny

It draws on ancient Germanic defiance, like Hermann (Arminius) the Cherusci leader who crushed three Roman legions in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, thus, halting Roman expansion & becoming a symbol of German liberty for centuries

This poem was included in the official Hitler Youth songbook "Blut und Ehre" complied in 1933 by HJ leader Baldur von Schirach (see attached images)

Below is an English translation of the poem as it appears in "Blut und Ehre":

1. The God who made iron grow wanted no servants, so he gave saber, sword, and spear to man in his right hand, so he gave him bold courage, the fury of free speech, /: that he might endure to the blood, to death in the feud. :/

2. Thus we will uphold what God willed, with true loyalty, and never again split human skulls for a tyrant's pay; but whoever fights for trifles and shame, he we will shatter into pieces, /: he shall not inherit in the German land with German men. :/

3. O Germany, holy fatherland, O German love and loyalty! You high land, you beautiful land, we swear to you anew: to the scoundrel and the servant, a ban! May he feed crows and ravens! /: Thus we march forth to Hermann's Battle and will have revenge. :/

4. Let roar what can roar, in bright, shining flames! All you Germans, man for man, together for holy war! And lift your hearts to heaven and lift your hands to heaven /: and call out all, man for man: "Servitude has come to an end!" :/

5. Let sound what can sound, the drums and the flutes! Today, man by man, we will redden the iron with blood, with executioner's blood and the blood of servants. O sweet day of vengeance! /: That sounds good to all Germans, that is the great cause!:/

6. Let wave what can wave, standards and flags! Today, man by man, we will remind each other of a hero's death. Up fly, high banner of victory, before the valiant ranks! /: We will conquer or die here the sweet death of the free. :/
