Jordan Stephens has publicly addressed his breakup with Jade on his podcast, saying he’s “uncomfortable” that his private life became a public news story:
“Right now, I’m silent. Jade’s silent. The papers aren’t.”
He explained he doesn’t want to go into any details until “things have settled” to protect those involved and avoid fuelling further speculation. However, he felt it was important to address the story with listeners:
“I think I’m uncomfortable with even the concept of it being out. I don’t know the root of the story. I don’t know who spoke to who or whatever. But I think it’s important to say to listeners who messaged me, I won’t avoid something that’s quite obvious. I don’t want to pretend that isn’t happening, or hasn’t happened.
I’m conflicted because I pride myself on being open and transparent. But this is difficult because, if I’m to believe how quickly speculation can arise, I’m always a couple words or sentences away from making things worse or [adding fuel to the fire].”
Expanding on the culture of celebrity gossip, he added: “It’s bizarre seeing people talk about my life. Some will have listened to the podcast. I think they’d have a unique angle on what’s been spoken about. Other people just literally read a story and are just commenting. It’s bizarre. They don’t know anything.
Right now, I’m silent. Jade’s silent. The papers aren’t silent, and people are making all types of wild fucking [theories], as they would always do, and desperately waiting for one of us to unfollow each other or one of us to... So even if I came on here and said, ‘Yeah, it’s been really tough,’ bang: ‘Jordan says it’s been really tough. Why has it been really tough?’ Then it continues.
If I was already apprehensive about celebrity culture, being part of it [in one moment] in quite a concentrated way has left me with more questions.
I’d like to think that, even though I’m a fan of other people or invested in others’ lives, I’d always hold a gauze in front of my investment on the basis that there’s no way I could possibly know what’s actually happening.
Bizarre alternate versions of people exist in other people’s lives. There are other people involved, obviously, and... yeah. I’m definitely going to talk and write, I think, once things have settled a bit.
Honestly, I’ve still not processed [this being made public]. I will say that I think, overall, people have... People are kind.”
He also discussed how his work makes a high-profile breakup more complex:
“My work happens to fall into social conversation. I like to pull apart my experiences in the hope that it creates insight or conversation – especially for men and boys. And for me, a big part of that is love, connection and whatever else. So it’s complex. I want to be... Again, I’m a very transparent person, and things will come out, like, when necessary. And I don’t mean to be too cryptic; it really isn’t that deep. I mean, it IS deep for me. But I think it’s important to... Like, whatever you may think, how complex and difficult relationships can be... that’s what it is. There’s no difference or exemptions or unusual subjective feeling when you also have followers. It doesn’t work like that. Grief – or any powerful emotion like that – doesn’t discriminate.
Anyway, I don’t know. Maybe I’ve even said too much right now. My main point is, I want to protect people. I don’t want to quite get into it. I’d love to be able to bring more specificity and insight. One of the most apparent difficulties in my life is that I’m working in ways I care about, and those ways are very public-facing, and that’s a very peculiar way to approach complex emotions. For me specifically, it’s weird because I actually would talk about this if…”
[Miquita: “It’s complicated because it involves other people.”]
“Yeah. But I pride myself on transparency. I think it’s important to build trust with listeners. So I wanted to say something.”
