The @EUombudsman has responded to our joint complaint and found that the Commission conducted maladministration by failing to complete a timely assessment of the social & environmental impact of #EUMercosur trade agreement.
.@EU_Commission should have concluded an updated sustainability impact assessment before the EU-#Mercosur trade deal was agreed.
We urge that, in future @trade_EU negotiations, such assessments be finished ahead of the final agreement.

54% of the Energy Transition minerals are on or near Indigenous Peoples lands‼️
They keep 80% of global biodiversity ➡️They are keeping the planet running and fighting climate change🌎
Yet, they are at risk of being left behind‼️

🚨 TODAY is the launching of the Raw Materials Coalition! 🚨
✊ Consisting of over 40 CSOs from the EU and beyond, we demand more inclusive discussions on sustainable raw material policies!

In a step in the right direction, the European Parliament vote on the Critical Raw Materials Act (#CRMA) includes need for Indigenous Peoples' and forest communities' consent to mining projects!
Now other important exemptions need to be addressed.

Local communities and Indigenous Peoples are often endangered by mining projects.
The UN recognises their right to Free, Prior Informed Consent – so must the EU!
If we want a fair green transition, the Parliament needs to make this part of the Critical Raw Materials Act #CRMA!
Quote: "Rather than presenting threat to Indonesia's sovereignty, the new EU Deforestation Regulation offers a chance to help us implement our own laws". I would add and stop corrupt practices of clearing production forests and protected areas to #palmOil

Last night, the EU concluded its #DeforestationRegulation - a law we've called for over 8 years.
While it's an historic first, the EU has failed to include proper protections for #IndigenousPeoples' rights, despite many promises to do so.

"The EU has missed the chance to signal to the world that the most important solution to stopping deforestation is upholding indigenous rights," said @N_Polsterer, from campaign group Fern.
The EU has reached agreement on the text of the #EU law on #deforestation-free products.
Our response from Helen Bellfield, Global Canopy's Policy Director, a🧵
“This is very welcome news for the world’s forests.."
The EU has agreed a new law to tackle global deforestation and forest degradation linked to EU production and consumption of eg. cattle, soy, cocoa palm oil and rubber!
Well done @Fern_NGO and others !!

Next week, the EU will adopt its #Deforestation law.
Join us on Tuesday 13 December to discuss:
Which commodities will be covered?
How will it impact #IndigenousPeoples & smallholders?
What are producing countries' reactions?
and more...

Mighty Earth is protesting outside the French Environment Ministry with colleagues from @Canopee_asso & @greenpeacefr. We're calling for the European Deforestation Regulation going through final crunch talks this week, to include Other Wooded Lands, such as the Cerrado in Brazil.
In 2019 during the Amazon 🔥, @EmmanuelMacron told Chief Raoni that 🇫🇷 is "defending the rights of indigenous peoples".
Today, we hear that his government is blocking the respect of land rights in the EU deforestation law. Time to walk the talk @MFesneau!

"In Brazilian civil society there is a feeling of hope for the democratic future of our country.
And of pride because Bolsonaro wasn’t able to achieve half of what he wanted, largely due to the resistance and strength of activists" says @naosoumaismess from @socioambiental
