After five years as Director of Choirs at @pershingchoir1, I will be joining the vocal department @HSPVA. This was not an easy decision, but “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough!” Excited to join this team and work with students from all over @HoustonISD! 🙌🏾

Our commissioned piece was written by Spelman grad, B.E. Boykin. Using a poem by Pershing’s creative writing teacher & fellow Spelman grad, Brittny Ray Crowell, “Stardust” is an earnest offering that pulls from Virgina Hamilton’s collection of folktales “The People Could Fly”.

Our second piece, Mark Miller’s “I Choose Love”, begins with soloist, Caroline P. This piece was written in response to the shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, and the text eloquently reminds us that even in the midst of pain, we can still choose love.

Our TMEA concert begins with “Music Down In My Soul” by New Orleans composer Moses Hogan. The spiritual’s ethereal opening moments underscore the hope we find from six simple words: “There must be a God somewhere.” Victoria M & Carolina P triumphantly lead the call and response.

Our @TMEA invited Treble Chorale had their first simultaneous rehearsal with F2F & V learners, and my goodness, we’ve never worked harder on 4 measures! 😆 This is going to be a slow and steady sort of school year, Pandas, but we’re gonna get to the finish line TOGETHER!

On Friday @PershingPandas theatre & choir students met Samantha Williams, currently playing Alana in the tour of @DearEvanHansen. She answered many questions! Samantha was a middle school student of our theatre director Ms. Ragland and a graduate of @HSPVA. @sammiewithcurls
