@Confarreo Also I read a few Clare Bell books, starting with Ratha's Creature. Maybe more young adult than kids books. But fantasy novels based around big cats were definitely my thing back then :)

@Confarreo At 12 I was reading Roald Dahl and I hated reading. I found his books to be darkly funny and very readable. Not sure if they are still a thing, but I hope so. I keep seeing a lot of complimentary stuff about David Baddiel's kids books too.
