NSF-Funded Pervasive Data Ethics for Computational Research: a multi-disciplinary project examining the use of personal/social data in computational research
This is amazing news for UMD and I'm thrilled to see @haldaume3 leading this initiative and my colleague Katie Shilton leading the participatory AI line of work. Congrats all!
Is your photo in a computer vision dataset somewhere? Or one of the many derivatives of them? And if so what might it be used for? Is there anything you could do about it? Maybe not. :(
More on the common problem of people becoming "data."
Excited to see this article finally in print. We use factorial vignettes to understand the contextual factors that shape attitudes toward research uses of data on 3 platforms: Instagram (image-based), Reddit (pseudonymous communities), and dating apps (sensitive data). Quick 🧵.
Just arrived in Pablo Alto for this event at Stanford tomorrow, will be on a panel about approaches to ethics education in CS. Watch this space tomorrow, I’ll tweet some resources once there’s a hashtag. ;) https://t.co/oeyJEyCFIA
PERVADE PIs Katie Shilton & Jessica Vitak (@jvitak) recently discussed project findings, including the team's ongoing development of a decision support tool for researchers, on "The Discussion Session" podcast: https://t.co/BiilQPbnjt
Hey #AoIR2022! Are you a researcher who uses pervasive data - rich personal information generated through digital interaction & used for computational analysis? Please take our survey to help us understand how researchers engage with ethics in their work. https://t.co/Yn8PLVypRl
You can find me at the @pervade_team table in the exhibitor area at #AoIR2022 during (most) breaks. Come learn about our project and play with our beta decision-support tool we’re building for researchers grappling with the ethics of pervasive data.
We have a researcher survey open at https://t.co/HW7PlmDPU0. And come find @michaelzimmer at #AoIR2022 to learn more and provide feedback. We’ll also hopefully provide a quick demo at the Ethics session Saturday at 9am. 3/3
The PERVADE Team is at #AoIR2022! PERVADE is a multi-year project to study the use of pervasive data — big data about people — in computational research. We’ve worked with researchers, users, platforms, and ethics bodies to try to get a better understanding of the ethical… 1/3
…challenges and solutions around the increased use of pervasive data across disciplines and contexts. We have a beta version of a decision support tool to help researchers think reflexively about the collection and use of pervasive data within their projects. 2/3
Keynote by @cfiesler on “AI Ethics for All: A Broader Perspective on AI Education” at the @techethicsnd Rome Call for AI Ethics Global University Summit.
An interesting application of participatory design principles to algorithmic auditing. Much of my motivation for thinking through the audit tooling landscape is lowering the bar of what it takes to execute these audits - and thus widen the scope of who can engage & participate.
So far, I've read 707 articles for my Ph.D. (#privacy, #dataprotection law, #fairness at @TAU_LAW). Below are some of the articles that have most influenced my research: (and they are free)
