Michael Chandler…MMA fighter…nearly two years without a win…
And then a sudden burst of insight!
“I can do all the physical training in the world…but if I’m not building up my mindset, I create a bigger, stronger, faster…more dangerous subpar version of myself…”
A subpar version of myself…
Now, there’s no doubt (at least to me) that his physical training is still some form of mental training. I write about this every day - that the mind is embodied and that bigger, stronger, and faster in the body lend themselves towards superlatives of the mind.
Your body drives your mindset as much as your mind drives the body…
But…
But…
A body fleet of foot and strong as an ox can (probably) only truly exploit these capabilities and capacities through psychological nitty gritty…through the small details of mind.
And so a sports competitor honing skill and building body might do well to engage in mindfulness and/or meditation. A sports competitor ambitious for titles might do well to develop mental skills for the battle ahead. A sports competitor keen to discover just how good they can be might do well to learn the psychological tools to become an expert learner of their sport (after all, the application of skill and will in competition requires a big dose of domain-specific knowledge in order to be optimal).
So…
I love the transformation Michael Chandler describes here. The physical reps must be solidified by mental reps. Physicality must be smothered in mentality.
Undoubtedly, a great competitor is a keen mix of mind and body…and…body and mind. Ambitious sports competitors would do well to work on both…every day, in every activity in every session!
