Good to see someone else bullish on mortgage rates while the rest of the world isn't.
I too expect mortgage rates to resume their ongoing descent post-election.
Remember, they're still down from about 7.50% a year ago despite a rough month and change.
It's been a sideshow since mid-September and once it passes, the economic data will be the driver of rates once again.
And as the other man cited in the article (Bill Adams, chief economist at Comerica Bank) stated:
“The Fed has signaled pretty clearly that they’re likely to continue cutting short-term rates in the near term. So that’s probably going to translate to lower mortgage rates as well.”
No, the Fed doesn't control mortgage rates, but a lengthy period of easing in short-term rates is often accompanied by lower long-term rates, such as the 30-year fixed.
Especially since cuts and mortgage rates are data-driven, e.g. lower inflation and slowing growth, higher unemployment, etc.
In other words, trust the process, be patient, and everything will likely fall into place.
Of course, mortgage rates are just one piece of the pie. We still have the issue of scarce for-sale inventory and high home prices to tackle.
Unclear how that will go, but thinking mortgage rates will shoot back up to 8% or higher b/c of election noise seems silly.
