Some news. Today we’re launching our nonprofit https://t.co/vnT2sWxFQ3. to help build a future that is resilient to emerging disease threats, supports healthy ecosystems & our own communities, & one in which we make decisions based on science https://t.co/4NMzngTNAO
🌞This Sunday, give Nature a little of your time. Make #Sunday → Tree Care Day and Nature Care Day
🌱Plant a tree.
🌳Care for a tree.
🏞️Protect a wetland (like pond).
🏡Restore a patch of nature (like a green space and Park).
🚯Reduce waste.
💦Save water.
🐸Let biodiversity breathe.
🧖Make #OneHealth a mission for life.
🌏Climate action is not only about saving the planet, it is about protecting the quality of life we leave behind.
🔮What we protect today becomes the inheritance of tomorrow.
🧣Tie a red tape/ribbon around a tree trunk as a symbol of your pledge to protect Nature.
❤️🩹Care for Nature today.
🥰Secure a better future for generations to come.

A dz US eliminated 1/4 a century ago is killing people again; and the answer of the fed gov has been to remove the dead from the record. That is not PH. It is the negation of it, carried out by the institutions built to practice it. @doritmi#measles

Well said, respected @doctorsoumya. Illegal wildlife trade is one of the biggest challenges for #Health.
🦠 Illegal wildlife trade:
- drives species toward extinction
- degrades habitats
- forces high-risk contact between stressed animals, pathogens, and people
🌍 That mix raises the chance of zoonotic spillover, exactly the pathway that has seeded past pandemics.
🤗 Closing those markets is both conservation and pandemic prevention.

🌍 The greatest legacy of #WOHC2026 may be what the world does and what changes after Lisbon.
🦠 The next era of pandemic management must move from: React → Detect → Contain
TO
Predict → Prevent → Protect.
🧬 Science is pointing toward a new One Health paradigm:
✅ Prevent zoonotic spillovers before they become outbreaks
✅ Integrate surveillance across people, animals & ecosystems
✅ Harness genomics, AI and early-warning systems
✅ Confront antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
✅ Protect biodiversity and the environmental foundations of health
✅ Build stronger, resilient health systems
🤔 But evidence alone will not prevent the next pandemic.
🌱 The pathway must be explicit:
🧬 Science → Policy → Funding → Implementation → Measurable Prevention
🌍 Governments and institutions must now turn the knowledge shared in Lisbon into:
✅ National One Health strategies
✅ Sustained investment
✅ Integrated surveillance
✅ Rapid data sharing
✅ Prevention-focused action
✅ Vaccine preparedness and equitable access to vaccination
⚠️ Don’t wait for the next pandemic to prove that we should have acted earlier.
👣 Let Lisbon be the moment the world chooses prevention over reaction.
🤝 One Health:
idea → implementation → prevention.

Grateful for @PeterDaszak’s voice at #WOHC2026 — showing how a single forest conversion can erase both profit and protection.
Deforestation does more than release lepto and malaria or cancel palm-oil profit; it starves the air of BVOCs, those forest phytoncides that ease inflammation, lift NK-cell immunity, and steady the mind.
Losing the trees costs us resilience as well as land. One Health is the only path for better tomorrow:
-smarter surveillance
-broader vaccines
-wiser eco-friendly policy
-shared awareness
#WOHC2026 will be a milestone for stewardship of Nature and humanity.

Some takeaways for me: we are still quite weak on surveillance of spillover from wildlife to humans. Our global system is heavily reactive with more support in disease detection after spillovers into humans & far less upstream where high-risk contact between animals & humans continue. The incentives to report or reduce risky activities are still weak because they often contradict economic needs in rural or agrarian areas. I have found this to be true in our research on Marburg virus in East Africa, as well as in Bird Flu/#H5N1 in Central California.
#WOHC2026@PeterDaszak “Converting a forest in Malaysia releases diseases like lepto & malaria - completely removes profit from palm oil plantation”. He presents #OneHealth Strategy for #PandemicPrevention: smart surveillance, broad acting vaccines, policies, action & awareness.
🐖 H1N1 is a zoonotic influenza A virus. The 2009 pandemic strain emerged via reassortment in swine and jumped to humans; pigs remain a reservoir with ongoing (though rare) animal-to-human transmission risk.
🔁 Reverse zoonosis also happens: the human seasonal H1N1 (descended from the 2009 strain) can infect pigs, where it can further evolve and potentially spill back to humans.
🦠 Seasonal H1N1 is now human-adapted but WHO groups swine influenza under “avian and other zoonotic influenza” and monitors these animal-to-human jumps because of pandemic potential.
🔬 Surveillance of swine strains is essential:
✅ Monitor the animal–human interface.
✅ Sequence viruses.
✅ Detect reassortment early.
✅ Strengthen veterinary + human surveillance.
⚠️ Pandemic preparedness begins before a virus acquires sustained human-to-human transmission.

The present #Ebola crisis in the #DRC is the policy of malign neglect that was adopted with the #COVID#pandemic now operating as the primary response to all public health threats.

Despite what you’ve been told by EVERY heterodox podcaster, the lab leak has received more positive coverage in both mainstream and alternative media throughout the pandemic.
These guys get so mad when I just point out there’s yet another paper that doesn’t support their preferred origin hypothesis. Gilles works at a bank btw
Here @philippmarkolin.eurosky.social puts in the hard work to demolish the latest lab leak Op Ed in NYT. Just because people want a 'mad scientist' 'China=evil' narrative to be true, just saying it over & over again don't make it so. https://t.co/VPsz1kmdvF
✅ We can question facts.
✅ We can debate evidence.
✅ We can challenge scientific conclusions.
🚫 But we cannot simply deny facts because they contradict our beliefs or ideology.
✅ Evidence deserves scrutiny—not denial.
✅ Science demands intellectual honesty.
✅ Reality doesn’t change because we refuse to accept it.
⚠️ US Congress attacks against Dr. Anthony Fauci distort scientific reality and will fail to prepare the US for future health crises.
🔬 Instead of political scapegoating, an evidence-based, nonpartisan national commission should be established to extract real lessons from COVID-19.
