CATENANUOVA - CENTURIPE

While the British 78th Division fought for the capture of Centuripe, the 3rd Brigade was tasked with holding the left flank of the advancing front. The West Nova Scotia Regiment was ordered to capture Monte Criscinà, considered an advanced post in Centuripe's defence facing Regalbuto. On the morning of 2 August, the West Nova Scotia Regiment, mistakenly informed that there was no enemy on the mountain, advanced in the open, and found themselves under heavy fire from the diehard German paratroopers. After suffering several casualties, the Canadians retreated. It will prove to be a useless sacrifice, as the conquest of Regalbuto and Centuripe made the importance of this mountain moot. The civilian population was displaced, taking refuge in the numerous caves around the town and in the countryside.

Subissant plusieurs pertes, les Canadiens battent en retraite. Il s'agit d'un sacrifice inutile, car la conquête de Regalbuto et de Centuripe réduit l'importance de cette montagne. La population civile est déplacée et se réfugie dans les nombreuses grottes autour de la ville et dans la campagne.

Dopo aver subito diverse perdite, i Canadesi si ritirano. Si rivelerà un sacrificio inutile, visto che la conquista di Regalbuto e Centuripe fa cadere l'importanza di questo monte. La popolazione civile è sfollata rifugiandosi nelle numerose grotte attorno alla città e nelle campagne.

While the rest of the 1st Division fought at Agira, the 3rd Brigade was ordered to take Catenanuova, defended by the German 923rd Fortress Battalion. The first attack took place on 26 and 27 July with the Canadians conquering the Santa Maria and Scalpello mountains. However, the Germans counter-attacked and retook Monte Santa Maria. The Brigade was then placed under the command of the British 78th Division that had just arrived in Sicily. The second attack took place from midnight until the morning of 30 July, beginning with heavy artillery fire and ending with the Canadians occupying Catenanuova and retaking Monte Santa Maria. The terrified population was displaced to the countryside, suffering severe privations.

Pendant que le reste de la 1ère division se bat à Agira, la 3ème brigade reçoit l'ordre de prendre Catenanuova, défendue par le 923ème bataillon de forteresse allemand. La première attaque a lieu les 26 et 27 juillet et les Canadiens s'emparent des montagnes de Santa Maria et de Scalpello. Cependant, les Allemands contre-attaquent et reprennent Monte Santa Maria. La brigade est alors placée sous le commandement de la 78e division britannique qui vient d'arriver en Sicile. La deuxième attaque se déroule entre minuit et le matin du 30 juillet. Elle débute par des tirs d'artillerie lourde, puis les Canadiens occupent Catenanuova et reprennent Monte Santa Maria. La population terrifiée est déplacée vers les campagnes et subit toutes les privations possibles.

Il primo attacco avviene il 26 e 27 luglio con i Canadesi che conquistano i mon Santa Maria e Scalpello. I Tedeschi però contrattaccano e riprendono Monte Santa Maria. La Brigata viene posta sotto il comando della 78a Divisione britannica appena arrivata in Sicilia. Il secondo attacco si svolge dalla mezzanotte alla mattina del 30 luglio, inizia con un pesante fuoco dell'artiglieria e con i Canadesi che occupano Catenanuova e si riprendono Monte Santa Maria. La popolazione terrorizzata è sfollata nelle campagne subendo tutte le privazioni.
