I get the sense that the political and media class badly miss Katie Hopkins. Back when the reality TV star was still a regular on our screens and in our newspapers, she could be relied upon to be the focus of attention whenever the people in charge didn't want the public's attention to be focused where it ought to be.

So when a British soldier was decapitated on the streets of London, or a suicide bomber went off at a pop concert packed with teenage girls, Ms Hopkins could be found saying something that a lot of people were thinking – only in a more colourful or unwise way.

A pattern emerged whereby, within 24 hours of any atrocity on the streets of Britain, the political and media class would be talking about how inappropriate Hopkins's comments were and how forcefully we must all condemn them.

Her comments were generally said to be 'divisive', 'hateful' and 'have no place in public life'. It was a comfortable place to be, because everyone could then avoid talking about the atrocity itself.

Karmelo didn't cry when the jury heard the 911 call after Austin Metcalf was stabbed.

He didn't cry when Austin's twin brother, Hunter, could be heard screaming in anguish and praying his brother wouldn't die.

He didn't cry when the jury was shown Austin's autopsy photos.

He didn't cry when they saw the blood-soaked shirt used in a desperate attempt to save Austin's life.

But he cried when he was found guilty.

And he cried again when he was sentenced to 35 years.

The only tears the jury saw were for his own fate, not for the life that was taken.

Austin Metcalf was robbed of his high school graduation, he will never get another birthday, another chance to live the life that was stolen from him.

Thirty-five years may be justice under the law, but for many, it doesn't feel like enough.

South Wales Police have shelved their proposed “anti-Muslim hostility” guidance following the threat of legal action from the Free Speech Union.

The force has written to the FSU confirming that it has pressed ‘pause’ on controversial plans to log comments deemed to go beyond “legitimate” discussion of Islam.

That would inevitably have included criticism of the hijab or halal food. More concerningly, it would have deterred people from speaking out about issues such as the grooming gangs scandal and Islamist extremism.

Under the proposal, anything deemed to go beyond “legitimate” discussion of Islam would have been recorded as an “anti-social behaviour incident” — the successor to the draconian non-crime hate incident. Such records can appear on enhanced DBS checks, potentially preventing people from securing employment, particularly in professions such as teaching or care work.

South Wales Police were also referred to the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) by Shadow Equalities Minister Claire Coutinho.

The FSU’s General Secretary, Lord Young, said: “Blasphemy laws were repealed in this country 18 years ago, and we will do everything in our power to stop them being brought back through the back door.”

Let this serve as a warning to any other public body considering the introduction of its own Islamic blasphemy law — especially police forces: we will challenge it.

The man on the left, Afsar Safi, a migrant from Afghanistan aged 30, kidnapped a 7 yr old girl and sexually assaulted her. He got 2.5 years in prison and is expected to be out on licence after having served just 6 months.

The man on the right, Reece Robinson, a British man aged 21, has just been fast tracked through the courts for throwing stones at the Southampton protests. He got 2 years.

How is this even remotely acceptable?
