Marley grew up in poverty in rural Jamaica and later in the tough neighborhoods of Kingston, so he saw firsthand that money didn't necessarily bring happiness or freedom. Through his connection to Rastafari movement, he believed that true wealth was spiritual living with purpose, faith, and freedom rather than chasing material success.
So when a journalist asked him if he was rich, Marley flipped the question and asked, "What do you mean, rich? Possessions make you rich? I don't have that type of richness. My richness is life." He wasn't denying that he was successful; he was making a point that real richness comes from life, love, music, and spiritual fulfillment, not money.
