The leftist fantasy that "capital" represents some kind of automatic process is not only false, but also reifies capitalist domination. The whole system is publicly designed & maintained & could very well be organized differently.
Saas and Harvey trace how MMT emerged not merely as a set of first principles, balance-sheet descriptions, and policy prescriptions, but also as a deliberate discursive and rhetorical intervention against dominant neoclassical paradigms and institutions.

Looks like it's still 2019 back here on X. Keep up with the reading, people. Nowadays, there's a lot more exciting things afoot.

One reason that we don't have universal childcare is that such a policy would be empowering to the people who do childcare work, because we'd have to increase the pay of such jobs to attract more people to do that work, and that creates threats to more privileged people.
There’s nothing “natural” about this. Firms aren’t even supposed to exist under bog-standard market theory. Firms are legal constructs. We could design their governance & ownership to reflect the fact that they are communities, not the singular creations of one person’s will. 3/3

Our cohosts speculate about the meaning of One Battle's rich aesthetic choices, including the mobile telephoto lenses that transform a conventional car chase into a dizzying allegory of an American culture unclear about its driving motivations and aims.

Willa, our cohosts argue, embodies the entangled, embattled, and yet still hopeful left politics that the film ultimately celebrates.

Our co-hosts discuss PTA’s acclaimed new film, One Battle After Another. The conversation centers on the film’s contribution to popular political cinema under the authoritarian violence of the second Trump administration.
Don't miss it! 🙌

In two years since Oct 7, “agenda setting” Sunday shows—CNN’s SOTU, NBC’s Meet The Press & ABC’s This Week—have not featured a single Palestinian guest. I wrote about how US media shuts out Palestinians while musing about the particulars of their genocide https://t.co/Ta5JkTLkeT
I have been informed that the Spanish government recently considered pursuing a public job guarantee but decided against it, on the grounds that the unemployment rate has been declining and is now "only" 10%.
This is a terribly incorrect understanding of the JG. Yes, the JG can be a powerful tool for ending unemployment and ensuring good livelihoods for all (and for this alone Spain should do it, because 10% is in fact an egregiously high figure!), but that is not the only reason it's important:
1. The JG creates a mechanism for *preventing* any unemployment that may arise from downscaling ecologically destructive and socially unnecessary industries (eg, fossil fuels, SUVs, fast fashion, etc), thereby allowing us to undertake such downscaling without the social consequences that currently make this politically undesirable.
2. The JG creates a mechanism for *reorienting* labour toward socially and ecologically beneficial activities, and *increasing* production where necessary (renewable energy development, public transit expansion, regenerative agriculture, ecological restoration, care, etc.), so as to accelerate social and ecological progress. There's a lot of work to be done to build a just and ecological society, and we cannot wait around for capital to decide it is profitable enough to employ people to do it!
3. The JG creates a mechanism for setting wages and working standards across the whole economy. If the JG implements living wages, a 35 hour workweek, workplace democracy, etc., the private sector will need to match these standards if they want to retain staff. This also dramatically improves workers' bargaining power.
All of these things should be appealing to any progressive or socialist political party, such as those that are in the Spanish government. The JG would make a material difference in people's lives and could be a decisive policy in enabling the left to defeat the right and win the coming elections.
The left project at this moment of great danger and opportunity requires everything. Labor organizing. Disruptive resistance. Legal battles. And electoral projects building majority coalition behind our politics. This will all be fraught w contradiction w/ no perfect strategy. 2/
