Free speech must be universal — or it means nothing. Many people seem to profess their love for freedom of speech — but is it only when that freedom serves them?

For now, the UK is officially a liberal democracy. But the increasing hostility towards the free press from across the political spectrum should concern us all.

As Alex Massie writes: “Everyone loves free speech until a reporter is in their face or up their backside.”

In the past week, we have seen Zack Polanski declare that it is time we “sorted out the press”. This came largely after he took issue with a Daily Mail article about the climate.

As Massie writes: “Being wrong on the internet or even in the pages of the Daily Mail is not, or not yet, a crime.”

Rather than debate — a cornerstone of any democratic society — Polanski appears to favour restricting the press. Are his arguments not strong enough to withstand scrutiny and criticism?

Too many seem unable to understand that bad speech is not the same as criminal speech — at least for now. Disliking what someone says or writes should not be grounds for silencing them.

California dragged Shana Gaviola to prison for opposing the gender transition of her son.

When Gaviola discovered that her son's public school began secretly transitioning him, she pulled him out and made plans to send him to a Christian boarding school.

The Biden DOJ charged her with kidnapping and sought the harshest penalty possible. Gaviola is going to prison for three years.

Her son is now an adult and never transitioned. Gaviola's sentence starts next week.

Gaviola does not regret what she did and said :
