To Be, or Not to Be, a Digital Currency?

When referring to digital assets, the word "cryptocurrency" is misleading. In fact, most cryptocurrencies are not currencies at all, and they weren't designed to be used as currencies.

For example, consider Ethereum (ETH). It has two primary functions. First, transaction fees on the Ethereum network are payable in ETH. Second, if you have at least 32 ETH, then you can become an Ethereum validator, participate in the network's consensus mechanism, and earn rewards.

Neither ETH nor any proof-of-stake token (e.g. ADA, DOT, SOL, etc.) was designed to be used as a currency. Therefore, it doesn't make any sense to use them for payments. Strangely, some merchants do offer these tokens as payment options, but the merchants immediately sell the tokens for their fiat currencies of choice. Why do they accept tokens as payment if they aren't going to hold them? It makes no sense to me.

On the other hand, some cryptocurrencies were designed to be used as currencies, and thanks to the power of the blockchain, they can offer huge benefits over traditional currencies and even stablecoins.
