Good Old Games but it's Good Old Names, like a database of good names that people don't use anymore. Shit like Eudora and Gwendolyn and Cordelia. And they're DRM free.
Planescape: Torment (1999) is a role-playing game set in the Dungeons & Dragons Planescape multiverse.
You play the Nameless One, an immortal amnesiac in Sigil, the City of Doors, piecing together past lives while accompanied by damaged companions. Not your typical "hello world" hero RPG, eh?
Choices and conversation drive the story more than combat, so if you were hoping for a hack'n slash fest, Planescape is not the ideal pick. What really set it apart was the writing. Chris Avellone’s script treats identity, regret, and belief as the real mechanics.
The setting is philosophical rather than heroic, and the ending asks what can change the nature of a man.
Probably one of the most unique and "grown up" RPGs from its era, with a dark undertone. If you ask me, it's still a benchmark for story-first RPGs, with a wonderfully haunting soundtrack.
For all you RPG fans from the 90s out there: what was your #1 real-time RPG from that decade?
(Note: I know some real-time RPGs had a pause option, so technically that’s a variant, but for simplicity’s sake, let’s include those.)
