Here is the definition of an X CPT code :

Section X New Technology is a section added to ICD-10-PCS beginning October 1, 2015. The new section provides a place for codes that uniquely identify procedures requested via the New Technology Application Process or that capture other new technologies not currently classified in ICD-10-PCS.

Section X was created in response to public comments received regarding New Technology proposals presented at ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee Meetings, and general issues facing classification of new technology procedures. The public had opposed many requests to add new codes to the existing ICD-10-PCS sections for the use of specific drugs, devices, or supplies in an inpatient setting, even when the code related to an application for New Technology add-on payments.

The much awaited Stratys, the upgrade from the Saphyr, is out, timed perfectly for the European Cytogenomics Conference starting on Saturday in Montpellier, France.

VIA, the rebranded, repackaged and rewritten NxClinical, is also out !

10 Stratys will be available through H2 2023 whilst manufacturing is being ramped up for full availability in 2024.

VIA is initially targeted squarely at Hematologic Malignancies across all data types, be they from OGM, Microarray, or NGS.

Post-Stratys launch thoughts :

1. Backward compatibility with latest Saphyr consumables, so Stratys can run alongside a Saphyr sharing the same consumables. Excellent for the customers, and excellent for Bionano which can serve Saphyr and Stratys customers with the same stock of consumables. The release of a new machine can often lead to inventory write-offs for manufacturers - not so here, which indicates a high level of engineering ingenuity by the way.

2. Throughput, Throughput, Throughput. The world of genetics and genomics woke up to variant calling in late 2022, realising that variant calling is increasingly becoming the most important aspects of genetics. So the world over there will be an increasing need for variant calling, and in the clinical world, as distinct from research, that means OGM, and everyone will want it .... yesterday ! Now, this is why 2024 is the breakout year for Bionano as throughput, four-fold initially, 13-fold in cluster formations, means ...... more and faster consumable sales. $$$$ !

3. Samples batching is over. Bionano does not "big" this feature but it is a major feature. First it's a key component of the increased throughput but, just as importantly, it saves laboratory technicians a lot of time !

4. VIA. Ravindra Kolhe (Augusta) and Adam Smith (Toronto Health Network) both saw this as a very big deal for them at the TD Cowen Healthcare Conference. Remember Dr Kolhe's words : "Never in the history of genetics has he ever seen as simple and as uniform a software workflow all from one manufacturer - normally you always have to play with two or three software suites to get to your results". If it's excellent for these guys, it's excellent for me !

5. Adoption by Gene editing/Gene modifying/CRISPR Biopharmas. This is a massive market. With the realisation that so much is about genetics, the biggest growth in therapeutics right now is in gene-editing based therapeutics, and gene-modifying therapeutics. COVID was conquered almost single-handedly by two mRNA vaccines, Pfizer and Moderna. The biggest growth in cancer therapies is gene-modifying therapeutics. All of which need Quality Control. Just this week we've seen AstraZeneca using OGM as Quality Control for gene editing based therapeutics, and Design Therapeutics using OGM as Quality Control for gene modifying based therapeutics. All biopharmas want throughput as they are all in a race against each other, or against the next round of funding. Enters Stratys stage left !
