While the framing by that post is acting like he's responsible, he's not saying he solely is. Objectively the kid did ask him and objectively it did open weeks later (and the project was a couple months behind). It's smart marketing.

as many have pointed out, this is an unfortunate consequence of how copyright laws work. if Google Books had met it's original objectives and not lost the cases involved, then rare books would have been non-destructively scanned and preserved, rather than hoarded. But, the norms were set

Nobody seems to understand this but I cannot stress enough that a judge told Anthropic that training their AI models didn't constitute copyright violation as long as they 'transferred' the text instead of 'copying' it, legally necessitating the destruction of the books

They got sued into oblivion, and it’s dead on a server.
