@WingAssociation@BerryCathal Colm was my Pl Sgt in A Coy, 58Bn overseas. A rock of sense and as sound a man as ever I worked with. He was drafted in at the last moment as a replacement but within days had garnered the respect and affection of a Platoon of men he had never worked with. RIP old friend.
@BrigidLaffan@ConorHogarty@BerryCathal I firmly believe, we would not have had the serious discussions on defence in the dáil in last 5 years had @BerryCathal not been elected. Before it was given lipservice. Suddenly govt parties realised it was an important issue. More work to be done, with Cathal leading the way.
@ConorHogarty@BerryCathal Without @BerryCathal the Dail would lack a TD with deep
Knowledge of defence & security. Kildare return him for the sake of the country
@LindaDoyle@tcddublin@tcdalumni Congratulations John - a wonderful servant of the college and all its stakeholders. We'll try to live up to your example and leave it even better for the next generation of students, scholars and staff.
#Budget2024 Positive funding move welcomed but falls well short of government promise. Unlocking €1.5 billion National Training Fund surplus a missed opportunity. Read full IUA statement. https://t.co/dnBBpIN7bU @SimonHarrisTD@DeptofFHed @JimMiley @ULPresident
#Budget24 was a mixed bag for higher ed.
👉 Support for Undergrads welcome; more needed on PhD stipends
👉 No major advance on core funding hugely disappointing. Additional €60M (& €40M last yr) is in context of €307M p.a. shortfall
👉 Plan to leverage NTF surplus is critical
This is the number one issue facing the higher education sector at present. Without an immediate commitment from Government to close the gap we cannot continue to be the lynchpin of the development of Ireland’s growth as an economy and as a society.
Government must honour its pledge to bridge the annual €307M shortfall in core funding for higher education.
Our sector is grossly underfunded and it is having a huge impact on students & staff.
Another budget cannot come and go without meaningful investment.
